    When maturity becomes stuck

Success brings its own challenges. Ironically, mature ministries may not struggle because they are weak. They may struggle because they become comfortable. Established programmes, systems and reputations are valuable, but they can also create a temptation to protect what already exists rather than ask what God is doing next.

    Challenge

    What it can look like

Complacency“We’ve always done it this way.”
Mission driftNew activities no longer align with the ministry’s calling.
BureaucracySystems become more important than people.
Resistance to changeInnovation becomes increasingly difficult.
Leadership stagnationFew new leaders are being developed.
Dependence on reputationPast success replaces present faithfulness.
Loss of next-generation leadersYounger leaders struggle to find opportunities to lead.

These challenges often develop gradually. The earlier they are recognised, the easier they are to address.
