    Course summary

A mature organisation has established its identity, structures and ways of working, but maturity brings its own leadership challenges. Leaders must protect what is valuable without becoming resistant to change, while also preparing the organisation and its people for the future.

This course explores leadership in the mature stage, with a focus on stewardship, succession, governance, culture and renewal. It encourages leaders to consider how they can preserve what is healthy, address what has become ineffective and create space for new leadership and new possibilities.

    Stewarding what has been built

Maturity creates an opportunity to reflect on what the organisation has learned and established over time. Leaders need to distinguish between practices that should be protected and practices that may no longer serve the organisation.

    Leaders will explore how to:

    • Steward the organisation’s mission and resources
    • Protect important values and cultural strengths
    • Identify practices that have become ineffective
    • Maintain healthy governance and accountability
    • Balance stability with openness to change

    Bringing values to life

Established values can easily become words that are familiar but no longer actively shape behaviour. Mature organisations need to continually ask whether their values are still visible in the way people lead, make decisions and work together.

Leaders will consider how to keep values active and meaningful rather than allowing them to become simply part of the organisation’s history.

    Renewing and protecting culture

Culture needs attention even when an organisation appears stable. Long-established habits can become difficult to challenge, and new people may experience the organisation differently from those who have been there for many years.

    Leaders will explore how to:

    • Protect healthy cultural practices
    • Identify cultural patterns that need to change
    • Create space for new ideas and perspectives
    • Encourage healthy challenge and reflection
    • Renew the organisation without losing its identity

Realigning the team and developing leaders

Succession is not simply about replacing a leader when they leave. It is about intentionally developing people who can carry the organisation’s purpose forward.

This section considers how leaders can identify and develop emerging leaders, share knowledge and responsibility, and create structures that allow leadership to transition well.

Remember: A mature organisation is not simply one that has survived. It is one that can steward what has been built while continuing to learn, adapt and develop new leaders. Long-term sustainability requires both faithfulness to the organisation’s purpose and openness to renewal.

    Leaders guide questions

    • What do we need to protect because it is central to who we are, and what may need to change?
    • Are we intentionally developing people who can carry the organisation forward?
    • What would renewal look like in our organisation without losing sight of our purpose and values?
