    Stewardship, governance and shared responsibility

As a ministry matures, stewardship becomes broader than managing programmes or resources well. It also means creating structures that help the ministry make wise decisions, remain accountable and continue serving its mission.

Good governance should not exist simply to add processes. It should help leaders ask better questions: Are we still aligned with our purpose? Are responsibilities clear? Are decisions being made at the right level? Are risks being recognised? Are we creating the conditions for the next generation of leaders to contribute?

    Healthy governance in practice

    • Roles and responsibilities are clear rather than concentrated in one person.
    • Boards and senior leaders understand their distinct responsibilities.
    • Important decisions are made with appropriate consultation and accountability.
    • Financial, operational and safeguarding responsibilities are taken seriously.
    • Leaders make space for challenge, reflection and honest feedback.
    • Governance supports the mission rather than becoming an end in itself.

    Reflection: Where is responsibility sitting?

Think about one important decision that currently depends heavily on the founder or senior leader. Could the responsibility be shared without weakening accountability? What information, authority or support would another leader need to carry it well?
