    Renewal

Renewal does not mean changing everything. Mature leadership requires discernment: preserving what remains faithful and fruitful while renewing what no longer serves the mission.

    Consider three questions:

    • What should we protect because it reflects our calling and continues to produce fruit?
    • What should we review because its impact, relevance or effectiveness is unclear?
    • What should we release because it no longer serves the mission, even if it has been part of our history?

This approach allows a mature ministry to honour its history without becoming trapped by it. The goal is not novelty for its own sake. The goal is faithful responsiveness to God, to the people the ministry serves and to the context in which it operates.

    Mini-case: A successful programme

Imagine a ministry has run the same programme successfully for many years. Attendance remains high, donors recognise it and the team is comfortable delivering it. However, recent feedback suggests that the needs of the community have changed. A mature response is not automatically to protect the programme or immediately close it.

Instead, leaders might ask: What part of this programme is still producing fruit? What has changed? What should we adapt? What evidence would help us decide? Who should be involved in the decision?

Reflection: Where in your ministry might a similar conversation be needed?
