If you’ve identified your ministry as being in the Maturity Stage, you’ve already travelled a significant journey. Your organisation has moved beyond simply surviving or expanding. You have established programmes, developed systems, built relationships and earned the trust of those you serve.
But maturity isn’t about reaching a destination. It’s about stewarding what God has entrusted to you.
At this stage, the question changes.
Growth asks: “How do we build the capacity needed to support expansion?”
Maturity asks: “How do we sustain fruitfulness while renewing leadership, systems and programmes?”
- Has established programmes that create meaningful impact.
- Operates through healthy financial, operational and governance systems.
- Shares leadership responsibilities across capable people.
- Uses evidence and learning to evaluate impact.
- Plans strategically for both today’s needs and tomorrow’s opportunities.
- Continually invests in people and leadership development.
- Can discern what should be protected, what needs to change and what can be entrusted to others.
Jesus’ earthly ministry lasted only about three years, yet His final season demonstrates an important principle of mature leadership. He had invested deeply in His disciples. They understood His mission, had begun ministering independently and were being prepared to continue His work.
Rather than trying to accomplish everything Himself, Jesus increasingly focused on preparing others. He prayed for His followers, taught them, corrected them and ultimately entrusted them with His mission:
“Go and make disciples of all nations…” - Matthew 28:19
The goal was not dependence on one leader. It was multiplication through equipped leaders.
