    Course summary

Well done on completing this course. Here is a summary of the key ideas from the course. We encourage you to discuss what you have learnt with your team.

“Leadership power is the capacity to influence others to move from where they are now to somewhere else.”

    5 types of leadership power

    • Coercive power- I have the power to punish those who don’t follow me. That is why people should follow me.
    • Reward power- Those who follow me are doing the best thing for themselves because they will be rewarded in some way – either by me or by God.
    • Positional power- God has appointed me as the leader of these people. They should recognise and respect this fact and follow me.
    • Expert power- I am the most qualified for this task of leadership. Therefore, people should follow me.
    • Servant power- People will follow me because they want to. They genuinely trust me as their leader.

    The principles of servant leadership:

    BenefitsCosts
High commitment and “want to” in followersTakes a long time to develop
High performance in followersNot as effective in gaining quick compliance as the other forms of power, particularly in the case of disobedience
