Starting a ministry or organisation is an exciting and demanding time. Leaders are often working with limited resources, a small team and a strong sense of vision, while trying to establish healthy patterns that can support the organisation as it develops.
This course explores how leaders can build a healthy foundation during the start-up stage. It focuses on clarifying vision and values, developing healthy relationships, creating a culture of trust and flexibility, and ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of the organisation’s mission or people.
The start-up stage is about more than simply getting an organisation off the ground. The decisions and behaviours established at this stage can become patterns that shape the organisation for years to come.
Leaders will explore how to:
- Clarify the organisation’s vision and purpose
- Establish healthy leadership and team relationships
- Create an environment where people can contribute and take initiative
- Build flexibility and adaptability into the way the organisation works
- Keep the organisation’s mission and values central to decision-making
A vision only becomes meaningful when it influences everyday decisions and behaviour. Leaders need to help people understand not only where the organisation is going, but also why it matters.
This section explores how leaders can connect vision, faith, values and everyday organisational choices. Biblical examples and practical scenarios help participants consider what it looks like to lead with purpose while responding to the realities of a new organisation.
Culture begins forming from the earliest stages of an organisation. What leaders tolerate, reward, model and prioritise quickly becomes part of “how we do things here.”
Leaders will consider how to:
- Model the behaviours they want to see
- Develop trust and healthy communication
- Encourage ownership and initiative
- Create space for innovation and learning
- Recognise behaviours that strengthen or undermine the desired culture
Even in a small organisation, people may interpret the organisation’s values differently. As the team develops, leaders need to notice when behaviour and decisions are moving away from the organisation’s purpose.
Participants will explore practical ways to recognise and address misalignment early, before unhealthy patterns become embedded.
Remember: The start-up stage is not only about building something new. It is about establishing the foundations that will shape what the organisation becomes. What leaders model and reinforce now can become part of the organisation’s culture for years to come.
- What foundations are we currently establishing that could shape our organisation in the future?
- Are our everyday decisions and behaviours reflecting the vision and values we say are important?
- What do we need to establish, change or strengthen now to create a healthy culture for the future?
