The first board meeting

In the New Testament, the closest parallel to a modern board is the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15, which served as the highest authority in addressing major and dangerous issues in the early church's life.
Although the apostles and elders likely did not see themselves as a formal board, they carried authority and credibility as leaders who had known Jesus personally and were regarded as pillars of the church.
The conflict arose when men from Judea taught that Gentile believers must be circumcised and follow Mosaic law to be saved, creating a sharp dispute with Paul and Barnabas.
The issue had been building over time as Gentile conversions increased, raising the critical question of how Gentiles were to be incorporated into the church without becoming Jews first.
What was at stake was the very gospel itself—whether faith in Jesus was sufficient for salvation or whether the law must supplement grace—making this a turning point for the church.
Because the issue exceeded the authority of frontline ministry leaders, it required a trusted, authoritative group to discern, decide, and preserve the foundation of the Christian faith.
