Relational Recruiting – Recruiting board members is a long-term, relationship-driven process, not a one-time event. Candidates and their families, pastors, and communities must be engaged over years.
Use of a “Black Book” – Track promising leaders’ collaborative spirit, integrity, and potential to contribute meaningfully to the board, learning from their past experiences.
Vision as Central – Clearly communicate the ministry’s vision using visuals and immersive experiences; the vision inspires commitment more than status, influence, or network.
Holistic Evaluation – Assess candidates’ character, wisdom, critical thinking, humility, and family support; involvement must feel like a calling, not just duty.
Board as a Community – A board functions like a family: unified, supportive, engaged with field staff, and maintaining ongoing informal and formal relationships.
Grace Precedes Work – Board members should be spiritually grounded, allowing their faith and character to shape their contributions and decision-making.
Experience Matters – Candidates’ prior handling of challenges and adversity reflects their courage, judgment, and integrity; wisdom underpins their ability to guide the mission effectively.
Terms and Accountability – Board members should have defined terms (e.g., 3 years) with built-in evaluation to ensure accountability, productivity, and alignment with the mission.
Ongoing Development – Board growth requires intentional investment: devotional times, mentoring, and exposure to ministry challenges to cultivate understanding and engagement.
Servant Leadership Mindset – Board members must balance the privilege of being chosen with the responsibility to advance the mission, bringing “dividends” back to God’s work with humility and dedication.
