Facilitating board member engagement

Board engagement matters deeply – Healthy governance depends on board members being mentally and emotionally invested, not just present.
Engagement has two dimensions – Active participation during meetings and ongoing thought, prayer, and contribution between meetings.
Disengagement is visible – Unengaged members don’t ask questions, show little interest, rush meetings, or mentally check out.
Wrong motivations lead to disengagement – Joining out of obligation, invitation only, or misplaced loyalty (e.g. local vs global boards) weakens commitment.
Boards must recruit intentionally – Before inviting someone, clarify why they are needed and what they are expected to contribute.
Test alignment before appointment – Expose potential members to the ministry’s mission, people, beneficiaries, and real stories to discern genuine passion.
Self-awareness fuels engagement – Effective board members ask, “What can I contribute?” and steward their gifts as God-given responsibility.
Strong orientation is essential – New members need honest, thorough onboarding covering the past, present, and future of the organisation.
Responsibility drives commitment – Assigning clear roles, accountability, and ownership increases engagement and contribution.
Address chronic disengagement wisely – Allow terms to end naturally when possible, but intervene directly if disengagement becomes disruptive or harmful.
