Defining the spiritual attributes we desire in board members

As we seek to identify the spiritual qualities we want in our board members, we encounter the somewhat tricky concept of “spiritual maturity.” This attribute is really important, but it can be tough to explain clearly. In this section, we’ll dive into this intricate aspect, drawing insights from Scripture, especially Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus. We’ll figure out if these qualities are relevant and necessary for board members in faith-based nonprofit organisations. Join us in this discussion, think about the traits that match your organisation’s mission, and understand why it’s crucial to have board members who align with the expectations found in these passages.

Defining the Spiritual Attributes We Desire in Board Members

The most challenging attribute to define is “spiritual maturity.” It is a critical quality but extremely difficult to clearly and concisely spell out what we mean by it. It must be clear enough for us to see it and/or confirm its presence in others. Spiritual maturity is essential to the character and competence of every board member.

As you read through the scriptures below, answer the following questions:

    • Do board members of a faith-based nonprofit organisation need to meet such standards?
    • Are there qualities found in these two passages that are clearly relevant and desired in our directors?
    • Are there some that are clearly not relevant?

Read the two passages and discuss these questions as a small group or as a board. Highlight the qualities/attributes that you feel are important for your board members.

    • To what extent is there agreement over these particular qualities?
    • Disagreement?
    • Are we correct in assuming, that a director of a faith-based ministry with all of its staff, its mission, and other resources needs to be equivalent to what we would find in the elders or leadership of a local church?

    Statement of Faith

In addition to these sources from Scripture, most ministries will have a statement of faith, which also surfaces ideas about specific spiritual qualities we would hope to find in directors, including ourselves.

Now that you have explored the concept of spiritual attributes for board members, it’s time to put that knowledge into action. The checklist below will guide you in reviewing and refining the qualities you desire in your board members. Use it as a practical tool to ensure your board aligns with your organisation’s mission and values. Let’s move from theory to practice and fine-tune your board member selection process.
