Growth can be an exciting sign that an organisation is fulfilling its purpose, but growth also creates new challenges for leaders. The approaches that worked when the organisation was small may no longer work when the team, responsibilities and demands begin to increase.
This course explores how leaders can navigate the growth stage while protecting the organisation’s mission, culture and people. It focuses on recognising the realities of growth, adapting leadership approaches, strengthening systems and developing people without losing the values and relationships that shaped the organisation.
Growth does not simply mean that an organisation is becoming bigger. It often brings changes in complexity, relationships, decision-making and leadership responsibility.
Leaders will explore signs that an organisation is entering a growth stage, including:
- Increasing demands on leaders
- Larger or more complex teams
- More responsibilities and competing priorities
- Greater pressure on existing systems
- The need for leaders to shift from doing everything themselves to developing others
Recognising these changes helps leaders respond intentionally rather than simply working harder.
The leadership approach that works in a start-up may become a limitation during growth. Leaders need to move from being the people who make everything happen to becoming people who equip others to make things happen.
This section explores delegation, empowerment, communication and developing leadership capacity. Biblical examples provide a framework for considering how leadership responsibility can be shared while maintaining unity and purpose.
Healthy growth requires more than increased activity. Leaders need to create the systems, relationships and capacity that allow the organisation to grow without becoming dependent on a small number of people.
Leaders will consider how to:
- Delegate responsibility appropriately
- Develop emerging leaders
- Strengthen communication and accountability
- Create sustainable ways of working
- Keep mission and values central as activity increases
Not all growth is healthy. Increasing activity can sometimes hide deeper problems, such as overworked leaders, unclear responsibilities, poor communication or a culture that is becoming disconnected from the organisation’s original purpose.
Leaders will explore common warning signs and consider the difference between growth that builds capacity and growth that simply creates more pressure.
Healthy growth requires leaders to regularly stop and ask what needs to change.
A practical Stop / Start / Keep activity gives leaders an opportunity to identify:
- What we need to stop doing
- What we need to start doing
- What we need to keep doing
Remember: Growth changes what an organisation needs from its leaders. Healthy growth is not simply about doing more. It is about developing people, strengthening the organisation and protecting the mission and culture as responsibilities increase.
- What has changed in our organisation that requires us to change the way we lead?
- Where are we growing in healthy ways, and where is growth creating unhealthy pressure?
- What is one thing we need to stop, start or keep to lead the next stage of growth well?
