One time, my 18-year-old niece was at home with me in our village. I saw an old lady fall down by the road. I went over and lifted her up. She was very filthy and smelly. She said she had not eaten for three days and could hardly walk.
I asked my niece to help me move her to my home, where we washed her and fed her.
After some rest, we helped her slowly walk back to her own home. It took us a long time to walk her home, as she could barely move. I was aware that my niece was quite embarrassed, as many people were staring at us. But she was still doing it with me.
Later, I wanted to take some food over to the lady and I took my niece along again. When we reached her door, I asked my niece to go in instead of me. She was afraid, because the old lady’s husband was a nasty man. I encouraged my niece. In the end, she courageously did it and came out very happy.
As we were walking back to our home, she asked why I wanted to do all this. I told her, “Jesus said when we do this to one of His little ones, we are doing it to Him. I love Jesus so I want to do this to Him.” She was deeply impacted. In a very thoughtful way she said, “Your faith is a real walk, but my faith and the faith of many in our church is dead. I need to be real with God like you.”
Today she is very fervent for God. I was simply being intentional in building her life that day.
