Be freed up to do what only you can do

In the previous activity, we started looking at some ways and ideas to make the documented processes easy to find. There are two very important steps not to skip in this process:

    1. Training

Put time aside to have an awareness and training session with your team. Make them aware that these documented processes exist and are there to make their lives easier and save them time. Train them on how these processes work and make some time to get feedback and incorporate helpful inputs if there are any.

    2. Assign process champions

It is time for you to empower your leaders to champion these processes, so that you can be freed up to do what only you can do. Delegate well by training them and then handing full mandate over to them to do the following:

    • Ensure that these processes are followed by all,
    • Update and maintain the processes as changes occur,
    • Continuously improve process,
    • Future focused: as soon as they have a good grip on the process, they can start identifying metrics to track the outcome of the process and whether the process is meeting its objectives consistently.

We can draw encouragement and inspiration form the example in Exodus where Jethro, who was Moses’ father-in-law, noticed that Moses was overwhelmed with the responsibility of judging all the disputes and matters of the Israelites. He advised Moses to delegate his responsibilities by appointing capable leaders to help him.

This story from Exodus teaches us that effective delegation can lead to improved leadership, better use of resources, and greater overall efficiency. As leaders we benefit from the wisdom of recognising our limitations and, most importantly, empowering others to share the responsibilities of the mission we serve.

But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
