    How to tell your story

Stories are powerful tools to facilitate connection with others. To fully harness the power of story, our stories must be authentic, vulnerable and simple.

    Prepare to tell your story

Did you know 90% of people surveyed say their number one fear is public speaking? But, if we remain silent, how will anyone learn and be encouraged? So, prepare to share. The more you can write your stories down and practice them the easier it will be to share with someone when the time comes.

Here are five tips to help you prepare to tell your story.

    Embrace transparency

People are more drawn to weakness than strength. An audience needs to hear your human self not your ideal self. When you share a weakness, struggle, or vulnerability the audience is drawn in and listens. We think it will ruin our credibility, but the opposite is true. Allow your heart to speak to their heart.

    Exhibit humility

The good news is, It’s not about you. You are sharing history as His story. Focus on how the audience will hear and receive. They are why you are there.

    Practice

Practice in front of the mirror or have someone video you. Listen for your pace. In order for the audience to understand you will need to speak clearly and at a pace that is comfortable to absorb what you are saying. Eye contact is key. Minimise “filler” words (um, so, ah) as these can be distracting. A silent pause is ok.

    Paint a picture

Stories make things real. Keep details to a minimum. The audience won’t need to know every step just the essential points. After writing your story ask a friend if there is anything you can alter or leave out to make it clearer.

    Enjoy

Take time before and after sharing your story to enjoy the favour of God as He is glorified through His work in your life. God is writing your story. The world wants to hear it.
