How to Analyse and Report Survey Data

Survey data is used to understand, analyse, display, communicate, and integrate quantitative findings with qualitative data, bringing together the two pathways of impact evaluation.
To analyse survey data, first look at the highs and lows (means/averages) to see where the impact is strong, where it is lagging, and where there is room for improvement.
Next, examine the distribution of responses for each item (for example, not at all, a little, some, a lot) to gain insight into how people are experiencing the impact.
Then disaggregate the data using demographic variables (time in program, gender, age, etc.) to identify meaningful differences and pull insights into “prove” findings and “improve” findings.
Assign numerical values to scaled responses to calculate means, identify strong items (2 and above), and highlight gaps or areas needing attention based on lower scores.
To report on data, use two elements together: a written discussion that explains the findings and clear visuals (charts or graphs) that allow people to quickly understand and remember the data.
Integrate quantitative and qualitative data in four ways: corroborate findings, extend understanding, report survey-only findings, or discuss and explore contradictions, noting when further investigation is needed.
